Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck with devastating force, consuming entire towns in its sweep. Buildings crumbled like sandcastles, and the chaos that followed was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I fell and spilled all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for school.
I arrived. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day read more was just as bad. seemed to conspire against me. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
